A heatwave was coming our way so, we decided to head up into the William O. Douglas Wilderness for a hike and overnight camp nearby. This was B's first real attempt at a mountain summit, as we have gone hiking many other times before but always on the lower ridges around Yakima proper.
We summited Burnt Mountain (6,521') around 6pm and then headed back to our campsite for dinner and time under the stars. The kid is growing like a weed, and thus covered the trail with relative ease. I'm super stoked for his accomplishment, and also that he definitely wants to continue exploring more.
After setting up the rooftop tent and eating camp dinner, we sat around by the fire and watched the sunset transition from bright star to an almost aurora-like glow. I pulled out my iPhone 13 mini to try out some night mode captures and was pleasantly surprised to see the Big Dipper in the picture. Next time, I'll bring my mini tripod and see how much detail we can capture.
After a pretty good slumber, we woke up at sunrise and I went out to capture some more photos of the surroundings. The morning light was certainly more definitive than the previous evening. Even though I didn't get a lot of photos from this quick trip, I did end up with an inspiring memory of witnessing my son's first ever mountain summit.
